Amethyst is a purple-coloured variety of quartz. It owes its colour to iron admixtures. The mineral is most often found in the form of druse, mainly within volcanic rocks. Its name comes from Greek and means "sober", because according to Greek beliefs, drinking wine from amethyst cups prevented the drinker from getting drunk. Amethyst is called the "stone of harmony and relaxation".
